Carbon Sherpa Becomes a Founding Organisational Member of the Carbon Accounting Alliance

I am pleased to share that Carbon Sherpa has been recognised as one of the founding Organisational Members of the Carbon Accounting Alliance (CAA).

This is a significant step, not just for us, but for the wider movement towards transparent, robust carbon accounting in infrastructure and the built environment.

Why this matters

The Carbon Accounting Alliance brings together over 1,800 professionals and organisations across 60+ countries who are committed to measuring and reporting carbon emissions accurately and consistently. Collectively, CAA members measure carbon footprints for more than 160,000 companies worldwide.

Founded in 2022, the Alliance represents a vital convergence of independent professionals, software companies, consultancies, auditors, and certifying bodies. What makes it distinctive is its focus on collaboration over competition—bringing together diverse expertise to solve shared challenges.

I’ve been a member since the beginning, and it has been valuable to be part of a community addressing the practical and technical challenges of carbon accounting head-on. The launch of the Organisational Membership at the end of last year was a natural evolution, and we’re proud to be among the first organisations to join at this level.

What the CAA stands for

The Alliance has three clear priorities:

Technical Alignment: Developing practical guidance and ensuring consistent interpretation of carbon accounting standards. This is crucial work. Standards mean little if they’re applied inconsistently across organisations and geographies.

Professionalisation of the Sector: Driving the development and adoption of the first professional qualification for carbon accounting in collaboration with industry bodies. As carbon reporting becomes more central to business and regulatory requirements, the need for recognised professional competence grows.

Engagement with Policy & Standards: Ensuring that the development and implementation of policies and standards are ambitious, fit for purpose, and consider the industry’s perspective. Standards must work in practice, not just in principle.

The role of Carbon Sherpa

Our focus at Carbon Sherpa is on making PAS 2080 workable for the whole supply chain—asset owners, designers, constructors, and suppliers. That requires clarity, consistency, and confidence in the data being captured and reported.

Being part of the CAA means we are connected to wider conversations about carbon accounting best practice, standard development, and professional competence. These conversations directly inform how we continue to develop the platform and support our users.

Good carbon accounting requires more than software. It requires shared understanding, robust standards, and a commitment to continuous improvement. The CAA embodies that commitment, and we’re proud to contribute to it.

Looking ahead

This recognition as a founding member reinforces what we already knew: carbon accounting in infrastructure and construction must be collaborative, transparent, and grounded in sound methodology.

The work ahead is clear. As regulatory and client expectations continue to evolve, the need for reliable, standardised carbon reporting will only grow. Being part of the CAA means we can contribute to that evolution—not in isolation, but alongside practitioners, auditors, and policy makers who share the same objective.

We remain focused on what matters: enabling organisations to manage whole-life carbon effectively, demonstrate compliance with confidence, and contribute to measurable carbon reduction.

This is a welcome milestone in that work.
