My University of Hertfordshire Story: The Foundation for Everything That Followed

Earlier this year I reached out to the University of Hertfordshire — not for any big reason, but simply to say thank you.

I wanted to acknowledge the impact of my MSc and, in particular, to thank an incredible lecturer, Dr Avice Hall, who played a key role in shaping the path I would go on to take. Her teaching gave me the grounding I needed in environmental management systems — and without that, I would never have gone on to specialise in ISO 14001, or become Chair of the UK’s SES/1/1 Committee for Environmental Management Systems.

That simple thank you turned into something unexpected. The university was so interested in hearing more about my journey, they asked if they could share it as part of their official alumni stories.

It was a chance to reflect on where things started — and how much of what I do today was shaped during my time at Herts.

I originally chose to study Environmental Management because I loved the environment and being outdoors. At the time, environmental careers were not always visible or accessible, but I knew I wanted to do something that made a difference. That choice became the foundation for the work I do now.

University was not a straightforward path. I lived locally in Hatfield, worked alongside my studies, and when it came to my MSc, I was lucky enough to be sponsored by my employer. That route taught me the value of focus and determination. It was not about following the traditional path. It was about making it work in a way that was real and meaningful.

The content of the course has remained relevant throughout my career. It gave me the tools to understand complex systems like ISO 14001 and the confidence to support clients in embedding sustainability into their decisions and operations.

Now, through PYE Management, I work with organisations across highways and infrastructure to put that into practice — whether that is through PAS 2080, carbon footprinting, climate adaptation or wider strategic planning.

Herts gave me the foundation. I would not be doing this work now without it.
